Chain
Link Fence As A Barrier
|
| The
diamond mesh size should not be larger than 1 1/4". The
intent is to make the fence "non-climbable" for small
children. If a larger mesh size is used, slats should be installed
in the fabric to reduce the openings to no more than 1 3/4".
The slats should be fastened at the top or the bottom. Slats
may be vertical or horizontal, made of plastic, wood, or aluminum.
Pedestrian
access gates should open "out" away from the pool,
making it more difficult for a small child to open them. Gates
should be equipped with "self-closing" hinges and
"self-latching" devices.
If
the fence is 48" tall, the latch release mechanism should
be located on the "pool- side" of the gate, making
it necessary to reach over the gate to open it. Or, if placed
on the outside, it must be higher than an effective reach
path of fifty-four inches (54"). All gates should be
equipped to accommodate a locking device and be kept locked
when not in use. If the fence is 60" tall or higher,
the latching device should be installed at least 54"
from the bottom of the gate.
When
vehicle access gates are used, they should be equipped with
a self-latching device and with a locking device, and kept
locked when not in use.
If
slatting is used, check with your contractor to make certain
that the strength of the framework is adequate to sustain
the additional wind load on the fence.
The
fence and gates should have no more than a 2" clearance
from the
bottom of the fence to the ground, wall, or deck surface.

|
Drowning
is the second leading cause of accidental death in the home
to children under five years of age.
In a number of states it has been the
number one cause. Over 4,600 drowning and near drowning incidents
are estimated to occur each year in residential swimming pools. |
Wooden
Fence as a Barrier
|
| When
a privacy fenced is used (usually 72" tall or higher) and
the 2" x 4" support "stringers" are visible,
it is advisable to construct the fence with these support strings
facing the pool, thus eliminating the "ladder" effect
from outside of the fence. The "show-side" or "finished-side"
would be on the outside of the framework, facing the neighbor.
When
a spaced picket fence is used and the distance between support
stringers is less than 45", the stringers shall be located
on the pool side of the fence; spacing of vertical fence boards
should not exceed 1 3/4" in width.
When
a spaced picket fence is used and the spacing between the
support stringers is 45" or more, spacing between the
boards should not allow passage of a 4" diameter sphere.
Where
the fence is constructed of diagonal members, such as a lattice
fence, the maximum opening formed by the diagonal members
should be no more than 1 3/4".
Pedestrian
access gates shall open outwards away from the pool and should
be equipped with "self-closing" hinges, and have
a "self-latching" device constructed to accept a
lock.
When
vehicle access gates are used, they should be equipped with
a self-latching device and with a locking device, and kept
locked when not in use.
When
the fence is 60" tall or higher. Latches and handles
should be installed at least 54" from the bottom of the
gate.
The
fence and gates should have no more than a 2" clearance
from the bottom of the fence to the ground, wall, or deck
surface.

Ornamental
Picket Type as a Barrier
|
| Wrought
iron, solid steel, tubular steel, aluminum, or PVC picket style
of fence has become very popular for pool enclosures. The width
of the vertical pickets will vary from 5/8" to 1".
When the horizontal members are less than 45" apart, spacing
of the vertical pickets should not exceed 1 3/4" in width.
When
the distance of between the top and bottom horizontal members
is 45" or greater, the spacing between the pickets should
not allow a passage of a 4" sphere.
All
pedestrian access gates should open "out" away from
the pool, and be equipped with "self closing" hinges
and "self latching" devices. If the fence is 48"
inches tall, the latch release mechanism should be located
on the pool side of the gate at least 3" from the top,
making it necessary to reach over the gate to open it. Or,
if placed on the outside of the gate it should be higher than
an effective reach path of 54".
When
the fence is 60" tall or higher. The latching device
should be installed at least 54" from the bottom of the
gate.
When
vehicle access gates are used, they should be equipped with
a self-latching device and with a locking device, and kept
locked when not in use.
